Meet the Team


Steve Bird: Director

Steve is responsible for developing, facilitating, assessing and moderating skills programmes and learnerships.

Steve originates from the U.K. and holds a dual honours degree in Economic Studies from the University of Sheffield, and a Diploma in Business Management.

Steve Bird After graduating, he started work as a contract schoolteacher before moving into sales in the FMCG industry, and then into the financial services industry where he was involved in sales and national marketing roles for 30 years, both in London and South Africa. For the past 10 years he has focussed on education and training with Agon Training. He is an accredited facilitator, assessor and moderator and in 2005 was awarded the Occupationally-Directed Education, Training and Development Practitioner Diploma (OD-ETDP, NQF Level 5).

He has specialized in direct marketing since 1985, and was the Chairman of Education for the Direct Marketing Association of SA for 7 years, as well as serving two terms as a member of the DMA Board. He was responsible for the design, development, and management of the DMA’s Certificate Course in Direct Marketing as well as being a main course lecturer for the past 20 years. In addition he has also lectured on direct marketing for universities and colleges. 

He has served as an external examiner for the Institute of Marketing Management (IMM) marketing courses and from 1999-2007 was a member for the Services SETA Marketing Standards Generating Body responsible for developing the national unit standards at all NQF levels, and specifically the direct marketing standards.

He was involved in call centre design, marketing and operations during the 1990s for financial services and call centre companies and has presented papers at conferences and workshops within South Africa, Zimbabwe and Australia.  

He has contributed chapters to the books, “Promotional Strategy” 1998, “Marketing Communications”, 2004, (ed Prof Ludi Koekemoer) a prescribed course textbook for the IMM and co-authored “Contemporary Direct Marketing” 2003 published for students at Technikon S.A.  

 

Rory Duckles: Director

 

Rory is responsible for developing, facilitating and assessing training programmes, and developing quality management systems and assessment tools.

 

RoryA graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand, Rory has over 25 years of marketing experience in a wide range of industries both locally and internationally. He co-owned the direct marketing agency, K&B Direct, for 12 years. He is an accredited marketing assessor and moderator and a qualified OD-ETDP (Occupationally-Directed Education, Training and Development Practitioner).

Rory has been heavily involved in education and training for over 30 years. He co-developed and presented the IMM Certificate in Direct Marketing for 13 years and has lectured on interactive and direct marketing at many universities and colleges. Over the past eight years he has developed, facilitated and assessed marketing learnerships throughout South Africa. He also wrote one of the Direct Marketing chapters of the IMM’s prescribed textbook, Marketing Communications (ed. Prof. Ludi Koekemoer).

Rory was a member of the Executive Committee of the Marketing Standards Generating Body (SGB) from 1999-2007; chairperson of the SGB sub-committee on interactive and direct marketing standards; co-convener of the Services SETA Strategic Planning Committee for the direct marketing industry; a member of the Institute of Marketing Management’s Examination Board and Assessors’ Committee, and has served as a judge for the DMA Assegai Awards, the Loerie Awards, Echo Awards, and PICA Awards. He served on the Community of Expert Practice for the development of professional designations for the interactive & direct marketing industry from 2009-10.
